Laureate of the prestigious 2015 Queen Elisabeth International Violin Competition, Taiwanese violinist William Wei has begun to show his expressive and unique sound to the world. Following William’s Shostakovich Concerto in the final of the Queen Elisabeth with conductor Marin Alsop and the National Orchestra of Belgium, the Belgium Newspaper Le Soir states that “William Wei gets everyone’s attention in the first movement; he expresses all the possibilities in the second movement; William burns all his passion and freedom in the music till the end.”
During his studies at New York, William won the Thomas and Evon Cooper International Competition in 2013, which gave him the opportunity to perform the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the Cleveland Orchestra at the Severance Hall. He then went on to win the Concerto Competition organized by the Juilliard School and played Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy at the Lincoln Center Alice Tully Hall. William began his solo career following the 2015 Queen Elisabeth International Violin Competition and his recent solo performances began with his first recital debut in Taiwan, followed by multiple concerto opportunities with the Belgium National Orchestra, Taipei Symphony Orchestra, Taiwan String Academy, Sejong Soloists, and Mainzer Virtuosi. William has also been invited to perform in festivals and venues such as the Lincoln Center, Alice Pratt Brown Hall, 4string festival in New Jersey, Green Mountain music festival in Vermont, Casalmaggiore music festival in Italy, Henry le Boeuf Hall in Belgium, Gasteig Conert Hall in Munich, Seoul Arts Center, Cremona Stradivari Museum (Museo del Violino) and the Taiwan National Concert Hall. William has worked with renowned musicians such as Gil Shaham, Marin Alsop, Brian Suits, Nai Yuan Hu, and Gilbert Varga. Born in Taiwan, William began his studies on the violin at the age of five. Since entering the Juilliard Pre-College Division at the age of sixteen, he has continued his studies at the school with Hyo Kang and I-Hao Lee. William is currently a recipient of the Jerome L. Greene Foundation Scholarship for his Bachelor degree at The Juilliard School. |
1st Prize winner of the 13th Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition and the 14th Sphinx Competition, violist Paul Laraia is enjoying the early stages of a multifaceted career as soloist, chamber musician, and new music advocate. Acclaimed for offering “long lines with lyricsm and poise”, Paul has been soloist with the Pittsburgh Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Filharmonica de Bogata, New Jersey Symphony, Nashville Symphony, and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.
As a principal member of the internationally acclaimed Sejong Soloists and as the violist of the Grammy Award winning Catalyst Quartet, Paul has given hundreds of performances globally in venues such as Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium, the Kennedy Center in DC, Seoul Arts Center, Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Hall, and Lincoln Center’s Great Performers Series. Additionally, he has been an invited artist at major festivals such as the Yellow Barn, Sarasota, Vail International Dance, Festival Del Sole, incheon music hic et nunc!, Hong Kong Generation Next Arts, Sitka, Banff, Grand Canyon, and Cornell’s “Mayfest”, where he has performed with artists such as Gil Shaham, Joshua Bell, Yo-Yo Ma, Jorg Widmann, Vadim Repin, Edgar Meyer, Donald Weilerstein, Cho-lang Lin, Roger Tapping, Anthony Marwood, Daniel Phillips, and Paul Huang. Paul believes that it is crucial to bring the highest level of classical music to all people, and actively engages in outreach performances, gives masterclasses, performs new music, and explores the boundaries of what can be traditionally presented as “classical music”. As part of the Catalyst Quartet, Paul has brought music to inner city schools, Native American Reservations, hospitals, nursing homes, and has presented concerts to areas and communities with limited access to live concert music. Paul believes that music’s power to heal and to connect people is a gift that everyone should have access to. Paul performs on a beautiful Hiroshi Iizuka viola in the ‘viola d’amore’ style, a Belgian bow by Pierre Guillaume awarded by the Bishops Strings shop in London, and is a proud supporter of Pirastro’s Eva Pirazzi Strings. |
